Rays, Cubbies earn the money

In a three release day for customers, The Winning Side Handicappers selected the Chicago Cubs (-130), the Colorado Rockies (+125) and the LA Angels – Tampa Bay Rays Over 7.5.

The Cubs were an easy winner in Cole Hamels’ first start for his new squad. They scored four runs in a first inning riddled with Pittsburgh Pirates’ errors and the home team eventually succumbed to the Cubs, 9-2. This is the kind of game we love to win on – the no-doubters from the start.

The Angels and Rays made us sweat a little more. Both teams, especially the Rays, seemed to have the bases loaded every other inning but could never get the single hit that would have put us over the top earlier in the game. It wasn’t until a Jake Bauers two-run jack in the bottom of the 8th, to make the score 7-2, Rays. Bauers atoned for one of the aforementioned bases-juiced failures when he hit into a double play in the bottom of the 3rd.

The Rockies looked great early. They went up 2-0 on the St. Louis Cardinals and even got their starter, Luke Weaver, out of the game by the 3rd inning. That ended-up being a bad thing for Colorado as the red birds’ bullpen didn’t allow a hit from the 3rd inning all the way to the 8th. In the bottom of the 8th, like it has done so many times this season, the Rox bullpen unraveled. For the second time in three games it was reliever Jake McGhee that was the culprit. After giving up the walk-off homer to Marcell Ozuna on Monday night, McGhee began the 8th by giving-up an infield single, a walk, and then a two-run double to Yadier Molina that put a close game out of reach. The Cardinals went on to win, 6-2.
